My apology first of all- I speak no German- I'm sorry but I hope English is OK.
I am a Scottish VW enthusiast from Edinburgh and I have a Golf 1 Cabrio Sportline GTI. I am restoring the car to the original condition.and I need to replace the suspension springs (coils) front and rear.
I am unable to buy the springs from VW UK because they need to know the paint marks on the springs to find the part number- but my springs are old and rusty and the paint marks have gone. ETKA does not have this information.
Please- does anyone have know the paint marks or part numbers for a Sportline Cabrio original springs? Please help.
Much appreciated,
Gregor
Good Morning Gregor,
could you please post us the chassis number (vehicle identification number)?
That can help us to find the right springs.
The Number beginns with
WVWZZZ15Z............

Hello,
as far as I know, the "Sportline" has the "707" code as option. May be, the "707" is also mentioned in the VW parts cataloque for the springs. I know that for sure for the instruments with their red needles.
Bye Frank weiß
Good evening Tobias,
Thank you for your reply.
My chassis number is WVWZZZ15ZMK031026
Cheers,
Gregor
Good evening Gregor,
I looked through the forum of out "sister site" www.golfcabrio.de.
There it is said, that the rear springs are of the Jetta I GLi marked with
two violet amrks. The original number here in Germany is
161 511 105 A
The front springs... I don't know. I'll ask my VW dealer tomorrow and
post the results here.

Perhaps the number 171 411 105 H (two green marks) may be correct for the front springs, but I'm not sure...
Sebastian
Thank you Tobias, I really appreciate your help.
Cheers,
Gregor
Hi Gregor,
additionally, the right account of paint marks should be mentioned in the Volkswagen Workshop Manual. But your dealer maybe threw it away, because he hasn't needed it for years...
Greetings from Wolfsburg,
Jörn
Hello Gregor,
I've taken a look at the VW spare parts microfilms.
On these I found that replacement springs for your Golf Cabrio are:
Front suspension:
161 411 105 F / 951 1, 2 or 3 stripes white/brown
161 411 105 E / 952 1 or 2 stripes white/yellow
171 411 105 O / 951 1 or 2 stripes blue
171 411 105 O / 953 3 stripes blue
171 411 105 H / 952 2 or 3 stripes green
171 411 105 J / 952 2 stripes white
Rear suspension:
161 511 105 A
Only if you're going to replace just one spring on the front, you need to know the "color code" of the other spring to find a matching spring using the above mentioned VW spare parts numbers. If you are going to replace both springs, just order two (same) springs. There is no further information on the microfilm specifying that certain springs fit only in certain model years, combine with certain engines or whatever else. Thus for a far as I can conclude (although I can't be 100% sure) all above mentioned springs can be used in your Golf Cabrio.
Kind regards,
Erik
Thank you all for your help.
I have ordered 2 violet for the rear (161 511 105 A) and 2 white for the front (171 411 105 J) as 2 green (105 H) is no longer in production.
Thank you all again!
Cheers,
Gregor
Hello Gregor,
see you in Wolfsburg, July 2009 at the Original-Golf Mark 1 Meeting?
Not really round the corner, sure, but:
The language is no problem, and the interest is the same.
Best regards, Stefan K.
Golf Mark-1 Diesel Formel E, 281.000mls. still the first engine.
And, by the way, right-hand driven cars are really funny: think about the people´s faces here in goog old Germany: a driving Volkswagen and no one behind the steering-wheel.... 🙂 .
