as you write, it is very hard to find original parts in good condition or new.
There are only parts from other companies like VanWezel/Equiparts. But they dont fit very good to the car. So, the front bumpers are often too short and scratch the front wings. Others are too big and have to much distance from the front wings. Rear ones fit a bit better but make often the same problems. The surface structure is OK in most cases, but protect the metal parts against rust.

There are only two alternatives:
Try to find good fitting new bumpers or
Search for good used original parts. New ones are rare, nearly impossible to find, I think.

I've bought a new, original VW front bumper for my 83 GTI last year. It also "scratches" the front wings.
So it's not a problem that only non original parts have.
It is even possible that the non original parts have much more the same size and form as the original VW bumpers.

Ich habe voriges Jahr eine neue, originale vordere VW Stossstange gekauft fuer mein 83-er GTI.
Diese Stossstange liegt auch am Kotfluegel an.
Also ist es nicht nur ein Problem von nicht originale Stossstangen.
Es kann durchaus so sein das die Repro Stossstangen viel mehr (was Form und Abmessungen betrifft) die originalen Stossstangen aehneln als wir denken.
